Superb 18 Kt Yellow gold James McCabe, Royal Exchange, N° 00085, London 1844
This is an 18 Kt yellow gold, key wind, open face pocket watch by the Royal Exchange, made in London in 1844. The watch is signed on the dial and on the movement. This is a very early example from a James McCabe pocket watch which makes this a real collectors' items.
For extra details about the importance of this maker see book: 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, page 523'.
DIAL: The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals with outer minute divisions and nice gold Fleur-De-Lys hands. The dial has a subsidiary seconds dial at the six for constant seconds and is protected by a bulls-eye glass. The dial is decoratively signed in the upper centre: 'James Mc Cabe, Royal Exchange, London, N°. 00085'. The number 00085 shows that it is a very early example from James Mc Cabe.
MOVEMENT: The gilt three-quarter plate English lever movement has a cut and compensated bi-metallic balance. The movement is decoratively signed: 'James McCabe, Royal Exchange, LONDON' and numbered: 00085. The watch is in great working order, however we cannot guarantee accuracy for an antique pocket watch.
CASE: The watch lies in an 18 Kt yellow gold consular case with a engine-turned finish. The case is stamped GH and has a London hallmark for 1844. The watch is complete with its original old key.
